The Story of Callisto

Callisto was a nymph who accompanied Artemis, the goddess of the hunt, when she went hunting. Like all Artemis' followers, Callisto was a virgin and had taken a vow of chastity.

Unfortunately, Callisto caught the eye of Zeus. Knowing that Callisto would not willingly succumb to his charms, he disguised himself as Artemis, and the young maiden let down her guard.

As a result of this union, Callisto became pregnant, and Artemis banished her and she wandered off to give birth to her son alone.

Hera, the jealous wife of Zeus, took revenge on Callisto by turning her into a bear, and so the hunter became the prey.

Callisto's son had also become a hunter, and when he was out hunting, he came across a bear which he killed, not knowing that it was his own mother. Zeus took pity on mother and son and placed them in the sky as the constellations Ursa Major and Ursa Minor.
